A gutter can look clear from the driveway and still pour over the front edge at the first afternoon storm. Palm fronds bridge the opening, seed pods settle at the outlet, and wet silt packs the downspout elbow. Our gutter cleaning service in South Florida goes after the whole drainage path, from the gutter channel to the spot where the downspout lets the water go.

Southern Gutters FL is a family-owned crew based in North Lauderdale. Chance and the team have served South Florida homeowners, landlords, HOAs and businesses since 2020, and the work still starts the same way: a free estimate, a written scope, and a follow-up call when the job is done.

Gutter cleaning service that clears the whole system, not just the top

A real cleaning is more than a quick scoop. Every visit follows the same order so nothing gets skipped and you can see what was done.

  1. Step 1

    Look before we climb

We check access, roof type, guards, downspouts, fascia and soffit, and set ladders with standoffs on level footing.

  2. Step 2

    Hand-clear every run

Palm fronds, seed pods, black olive leaves and compacted silt come out by hand and go into buckets and tarps, not your flower beds.

  3. Step 3

    Clear the downspouts

Outlets, elbows and straight runs are opened up, including the frogs and nests that love South Florida downspouts.

  4. Step 4

    Test the flow

We run water through each section and watch where it exits, so a hidden blockage or bad discharge point shows up now, not in July.

  5. Step 5

    Photograph and explain

You get before-and-after photos plus notes on anything loose, leaking, sagging or rotted, with repair kept separate from cleaning.

  6. Step 6

    Leave it clean

Debris is bagged and hauled away, gates are closed behind us and the walkways are swept.

If the gutters are clean but water still pools at the slab, the problem is usually slope, too few downspouts or a poor discharge spot. That is a downspout and drainage fix, and we will tell you so instead of selling another cleaning.

First 30 minutes: what to check when gutters overflow

Stay on the ground. Nearly everything worth knowing can be seen from the driveway, and a wet roof or a ladder in the rain is the wrong place to investigate.

Ground-level view of an overflowing corner gutter, stained stucco and a detached downspout after rain
Check from the ground first: where the water spills, what the downspout is doing, and what the wall looks like.
  • Take ground-level photos of the gutter line, fascia, soffit, walls, landscaping and any storm debris before anyone removes material.
  • Note exactly where water spills: a corner, a seam, right above a downspout, or along a long run.
  • Check each downspout: attached, crushed, or dumping water against the slab?
  • Look for stained stucco, washed-out mulch and puddles that linger.
  • Write down the date and roughly when the storm hit, in case an insurance conversation follows.

Stop looking and call when you see

Water coming inside, a gutter hanging off the fascia, a damaged roof edge, sparking or wet wiring, or any section you cannot reach without climbing. Stay clear of the hazard and call for emergency gutter cleaning or our gutter overflow service. A photo records the condition; it does not prove which storm caused it or that a policy covers it.

What causes gutters to overflow during South Florida storms?

Debris is the usual suspect, not the only one. A spotless gutter still spills if the downspout is plugged below grade, the run has lost its slope, or the discharge point dumps water back toward the house. This is the triage we run on every service call, and the right column is what to ask for in writing.

How do professionals clear blocked downspouts?

Downspout cleaning in South Florida starts at the top: we clear the outlet first, because that is where palm seed pods and silt pack tight. Then we flush from the top with a hose, feed a hand snake through elbows that will not clear, and check any buried line at its cleanout and pop-up emitter. The job is not done until water runs freely from the gutter all the way to its discharge point. Full details are on our downspout cleaning and flushing page.

Why homeowners choose a family-owned gutter company

South Florida has no shortage of gutter contractors. These are the reasons customers mention most in our 54 Google reviews.

  • On time, and in touch

Customers keep mentioning punctuality and quick replies, even on weekends. You will know when we are coming and what we found.

  • Seamless is our specialty

Gutters are roll-formed on site from heavy aluminum and hung with stainless-steel hardware, in a wide range of colors.

  • Honest scope, fair pricing

Free written estimates that separate cleaning, repair and replacement. If a repair will do, we say so.

  • Small jobs welcome

One downspout, a single sagging run or a removal-only job: we take the work other companies turn down.

  • Water goes where it should

Downspouts sized and placed for tropical downpours, with underground drainage when water keeps pooling.

  • Warranty on installs

New gutter installations carry a 3-year workmanship and 20-year materials warranty.

How we protect your property, our crew and the canals

Ladder standoff resting against a roof edge so the ladder never touches the gutter
Standoffs keep ladder weight off the gutter and away from stucco.

The OSHA ladder standard (29 CFR 1926.1053) requires ladders to stand on stable, level footing and be secured so they cannot slip. Every setup follows it: standoffs keep ladder weight off the gutter and stucco, a second person spots on two-story homes, and we never walk barrel tile.

Gutter debris removal means buckets and tarps, then into bags we haul away. Nothing gets washed into storm drains that empty into canals, the Intracoastal Waterway and Biscayne Bay, in line with EPA stormwater best-management guidance.

How to verify a gutter company before work begins

Florida’s contractor licensing rules, administered by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), are aimed at construction work: routine gutter cleaning may not require a state contractor license, while installation and structural repair can fall under those rules, and county or city business-tax and competency requirements can still apply. You can look up any state license at myfloridalicense.com. Before any South Florida gutter service climbs a ladder at your home, ask for:

  • The full business name and the person accountable for the job.
  • Any Florida or county license or competency card that applies to the work.
  • A current certificate of general-liability insurance.
  • Workers’ compensation coverage or a valid exemption.
  • A written scope listing downspouts, flow testing, photos, cleanup and exclusions.

Ask us for any of it. Southern Gutters FL operates as SouthernGutters FL LLC, is owned by Chance, sends insured crews, puts every scope in writing, and backs new gutter installations with a 3-year workmanship and 20-year materials warranty.

Chance took over Southern Gutters FL around 2020, first working out of West Palm Beach, then Oakland Park, and now North Lauderdale. He runs it the way a family business should: answer the phone, show up when promised, treat the property like your own, and call afterward to make sure everything drains. That approach has earned a 4.9-star average across 54 Google reviews.

Margaret McCarrick · Google review, 2021

“Had new seamless gutters installed due to previous installation being done improperly and causing water damage. Chance fixed the issues with new appropriately sized seamless gutters that look super clean and even added some underground drainage to get the water away from the house where it was pooling. Highly recommend. Pricing was competitive after several other quotes.”

D B · Google review, 2022

“After receiving three quotes, I went with Chance. Chance and his crew were all professional, arrived on-site to complete the project as promised. All the gutter and downspouts were meticulously done. Chance also did an incredible job of routing all of the run-off underground and away from my home. 10 star is a better rating for this guy.”

Kenneth Ball · Google review, 2023

“Installed seamless gutters all the way around the house w/ 8 downspouts. Great looking work and attentive to the little details around the corners and painting any cut/exposed edges as he went.”

Chris Fettig · Google review, 2021

“Southern Gutters FL is an outstanding company, from start to finish. Contacted them on a Sunday thinking that I would not get a response till Monday, wrong received text from them shortly after leaving message. I explained my issue provided photos and architectural rendering received detailed response with what would be needed to correct a poor installation from another gutter company in this area and me playing Bob Villa which I don't recommend "I completely pulled the gutters out and off the house well mostly off some was still hanging" 😭🤪 and a quote for service and they installed two days later making my back yard perfect for the 4th of July weekend. First two photos was my Handy work 🤯 the next two are after Southern Gutter was finished with perfect installation and gutters that actually drain.”

Which is better for my property: cleaning, repair, gutter guards, or replacement?

Clean when debris is the problem and the gutters are sound. Repair when sections leak, sag or pull loose. Replace when failure is widespread. We tell you which applies before you spend anything.

  1. Inspect and photograph the gutters, fasteners, seams, fascia, soffit and downspouts.
  2. Clear the debris and run water through every section.
  3. If the water moves and the structure is solid, set up maintenance, not replacement.
  4. If leaks, sagging, loose sections or soft fascia remain, get a written gutter repair scope.
  5. If failure is widespread, or old sectional gutters leak at every seam, compare a gutter replacement with new seamless aluminum gutters. Copper gutters and half-round styles suit some historic and estate homes.

Can gutter cleaning prevent water from pooling near a foundation?

Yes, when a clog is what sends water over the edge. If pooling continues after a cleaning, look lower: a downspout that empties against the wall, a buried line full of silt, or a yard that sits on low, flat limestone ground with nowhere for the water to go. In those cases underground downspout drainage or a moved discharge point fixes what cleaning cannot.

How much does gutter cleaning cost in South Florida?

It depends on the home, so we price every gutter cleaning in South Florida from a free on-site estimate instead of a flat number. These are the factors that move a quote, and every one of them should be written on yours. Our gutter cleaning cost guide walks through each in more detail.

What changes the price of a gutter cleaning
FactorWhat we look atEffect on the quote
Linear footageThe total length of gutter around the house, porches and garageThe biggest single driver
Stories and roof heightOne, two or three stories; ladder setup and accessTaller homes take more setup and time
Roof typeShingle, barrel tile, metal, or flat with scuppersTile and flat roofs need slower, careful access
Debris loadPalm fronds, seed pods, compacted silt, plants growing in the gutterPacked, wet debris takes longer than loose leaves
DownspoutsNumber of outlets, elbows and any buried linesHeavy blockages and underground lines add time
Gutter guardsWhether guards must be lifted, cleaned and resetAdds labor on most guarded homes
  • Compare written quotes line by line: hand cleaning, downspout clearing, a water-flow test, photos and haul-away should all be listed.
  • A low number that only covers a surface scoop is not the same job.

Our gutter guards page compares guard types for palm and black olive debris. Guards reduce cleanings; they do not end inspections.

When should you clean gutters in South Florida?

Here the calendar is set by rain, not by falling leaves. Roughly 70 percent of the year’s rain arrives in the wet season that runs from about mid-May to mid-October, usually as short, violent afternoon storms that can drop an inch or more in under an hour. Hurricane season overlaps it from June 1 to November 30.

That is why most homes need at least two cleanings: one in April or early May, before the daily storms begin, and one in October or November, after the summer growth and storm debris have settled into the gutters. Homes under black olive trees, royal palms, oaks or mahogany often need a third visit in midsummer. Barrel-tile roofs shed grit and hold debris in the valleys, so they clog faster than shingle roofs of the same size.

Before a named storm, the goal changes from cleaning to securing: clear the outlets, tighten hangers and strap downspouts so nothing becomes a projectile. After a storm, photograph any damage before debris is removed. Our pre-hurricane gutter prep and gutter maintenance plans are built around exactly this calendar.

A simple South Florida gutter calendar
WhenWhat to doWhy it matters

Late May – JuneCheck hangers, straps and discharge pointsHurricane season begins June 1
July – AugustSpot check under heavy trees and tile roofsSummer growth and seed pods refill gutters
After any major stormPhotograph, then clear storm debrisDocumentation first, cleanup second

Why do palm fronds and seed pods clog South Florida gutters?

Palm fronds lie across the gutter and act like a dam. Royal palm and queen palm seed clusters, black olive leaves and mahogany pods slip underneath and settle at the outlet, and the next rain packs them into a wet plug. From the street the gutter looks fine; the downspout below it is solid. Valleys, corners and the top of every outlet catch the most. That is why our storm debris gutter cleaning follows the water from the gutter to the ground: storm-ready gutter cleaning in South Florida means a clear path, not just a clean trough.

When should I clean my gutters before Florida’s rainy season?

  1. Before mid-May: gutter maintenance in South Florida starts with a full pre-storm gutter cleaning, downspout flush and flow test, with photos of the fascia, soffit and walls as they are today.
  2. Before June 1: check hangers, loose sections, guards and where each downspout discharges, ahead of hurricane season.
  3. Midsummer: a quick check under heavy trees and on tile roofs, where wet-season rain (often 30 to 45 inches) refills gutters fastest.
  4. After any major storm: photograph first, then clear storm debris.
  5. October or November: a post-storm gutter cleaning and inspection, then set the next date by debris load.

When should gutters be inspected after a hurricane or major storm?

As soon as it is safe to be outside, and before anyone starts pulling debris. Hurricane season peaks from mid-August to mid-October, so that is when most post-hurricane gutter cleaning in South Florida, and most gutter inspection in South Florida, happens. Cleaning and insurance documentation go together but are not the same thing: we document what we see and what we do; your insurer decides coverage. Our post-storm debris clean-out includes a photo record built for that conversation.

  • Date-stamped photos of the gutter line, fascia, soffit, walls and yard before cleanup.
  • Cleaning, clearing, testing and cleanup listed on the invoice, with after photos.
  • Pre-existing conditions kept separate from storm observations.
  • A reminder to read your policy and contact your insurer or adjuster promptly.

Gutter cleaning questions, answered

What does a South Florida gutter cleaning service include?

Ours includes an access and condition check, hand removal of palm fronds, seed pods, leaves and silt, clearing of the downspout outlets, a water-flow test on every run, before-and-after photos, and haul-away of the debris. Repairs, guards and underground drain work are quoted separately, so you always know what you are paying for.

How often should gutters be cleaned in South Florida?

Most homes need two cleanings a year: one before the wet season starts in mid-May and one after hurricane season in the fall. Homes under black olive, palm, oak or mahogany trees, and many barrel-tile roofs, do better with three or four visits. A maintenance plan keeps that on schedule.

Why do my gutters overflow even after they were cleaned?

Overflow after a cleaning usually points to something other than debris: a blocked downspout elbow or buried line, a gutter that has lost its slope, too few downspouts for the roof area, or a 5-inch gutter that is simply too small for a tropical downpour. We test the flow and tell you which one it is.

Do you clean gutters on tile roofs and two-story homes?

Yes. On barrel and concrete tile we work from ladders with standoffs instead of walking the tile, and two- and three-story homes get the right ladder setup and a spotter. Flat roofs with scuppers and leader heads are cleared the same visit.

Does gutter cleaning include a water-flow test and debris haul-away?

Yes, with us it does. Every cleaning ends with water run through each section so a buried clog or bad discharge point shows up before we leave, and all debris is bagged and hauled away rather than left in your beds or washed toward the storm drain. Elsewhere, ask: many quotes only cover a surface scoop.

Does routine gutter cleaning require a Florida contractor license?

Not always. Under Florida’s contractor licensing rules, administered by DBPR, routine cleaning may not require a state contractor license, while installation and structural repair can fall under contractor rules, and counties and cities can add business-tax and competency requirements. Whoever you hire, ask for their business name, any applicable license, and current liability and workers’ compensation documentation.

Is gutter cleaning covered by homeowners insurance?

Usually not on its own, because routine cleaning is maintenance. Storm damage to gutters, fascia or soffit may be a different story, and your insurer decides that under your policy. Photograph everything before cleanup; after a storm we keep pre-existing conditions separate from what we observed, which gives your adjuster a clearer record.

Is it safe to clean tall gutters without professional ladder equipment?

No. Two-story gutters and tile roofs need a ladder on stable, level footing that is secured against slipping, as OSHA’s ladder standard requires for workers, plus standoffs and a spotter. Wet roofs, power lines and wasp nests make it riskier. If a section needs a climb, call us rather than borrowing a ladder.

Can you install new seamless gutters if mine are failing?

Yes. Seamless installation is our specialty: gutters are roll-formed on site to the exact length of each run, hung with stainless hardware and backed by a 3-year workmanship and 20-year materials warranty. If repair makes more sense, we will say so first.

Where does your South Florida gutter cleaning service operate?

We serve Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties from our North Lauderdale base, Monday to Friday, 9 to 5: from Jupiter and Tequesta through Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood down into Miami. Central Broward is minutes away; farther stops are grouped by day. Call with your address and we will confirm scheduling.
