Gutter replacement in South Florida usually starts with a homeowner who is tired of paying for the same leak twice. The seams drip again a month after they were resealed, the back run sags a little more each rainy season, or orange streaks are running down the stucco from gutters that were installed before anyone on the street remembers.
We look at the whole system before recommending anything, and if a repair is the honest answer, we say so. When replacement is the right call, our crew removes the old runs, fixes the fascia behind them, and installs seamless aluminum formed on site, with the same 3-year workmanship and 20-year materials warranty that covers every seamless gutter installation we do.
Signs it is time to replace old gutters instead of patching
One dripping corner is a repair. A pattern of failures is a replacement. These are the signs we look for when a homeowner asks which one they need:
- Leaks at many joints, not just one. On sectional gutters, every slip connector is a future drip.
- Rust or pinholes. Galvanized steel gutters on older homes rust from the inside out, and no sealant fixes that.
- Sagging and pull-away along a whole run, often because the fascia behind it has gone soft.
- Standing water that never drains, meaning the run has lost its pitch.
- Overflow in every storm even when the gutter is clean, a sign it was undersized for the roof.
- Chalky, faded finish with split end caps and loose miters on aluminum that has simply aged out.
Age leaves clues too. If long spikes run through round ferrules into the fascia, the system was most likely hung twenty or more years ago, and on older CBS homes in Sunrise or Lauderhill those spikes are often backing out of the board. Galvanized steel with orange streaks below each joint is another sign the metal itself is near the end.
Our article on nine signs it’s time to replace your gutters shows several of these with photos.
Rusted gutter replacement and other South Florida failure patterns
Our climate wears gutters out in predictable ways. Salt air drifting inland from the Intracoastal attacks galvanized steel and any bare cut edge. Summer roof temperatures bake the sealant in sectional joints until it shrinks away. Heavy afternoon storms put full loads of water on hangers year after year.

We also see damage people caused trying to help: steel screws driven into aluminum that started galvanic corrosion, gutters straightened after a hurricane that never held their pitch again, and runs patched with three brands of sealant. Once a system is more patch than gutter, a full replacement is usually cheaper over the next decade than another round of repairs.
Repair, one new run or full gutter replacement: how do we decide?
We walk every side of the house, check the joints from a ladder, run water through the system to watch where it goes, and press on the fascia behind each hanger. Then we lay out the options.

| Option | When it makes sense | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Targeted repair | Sound gutters with one or two leaking corners or loose hangers | Lowest cost now, but it does not stop the rest of an aging system from failing |
| Replace one run | A single side damaged by a falling limb or ladder while the rest is solid | New metal may look brighter than aged runs beside it |
| Full replacement | Widespread leaks, rust, sagging or an undersized system | Larger project, but one consistent system under one warranty |
If targeted work is enough, our gutter repair crew handles it, and a run that has only lost its slope can often be saved with sagging gutter repair and re-pitching.
What improves in a sectional to seamless upgrade?
Replacement is the moment to fix the design, not just the metal. A typical upgrade swaps sectional pieces for one continuous run per wall, which removes most of the joints that were leaking. It is also when we resize: if the old 5-inch gutter overflowed under a tile valley, the new one may be 6-inch with 3x4 downspouts.

We replace spike-and-ferrule hangers with hidden hangers and stainless screws, add a downspout where water was traveling too far, and paint every cut edge. If you want a different color than the old system, we can change it, though an HOA may need to approve that first.

Permits, HOA approval and who should do the work
High-wind HVHZ provisions of the Florida Building Code govern exterior work in Broward and Miami-Dade, yet building departments differ on whether a like-for-like gutter swap, new fascia or a buried drain tie-in needs a permit, so check with your city. A color or profile change in a deed-restricted community usually needs architectural approval first. Because tear-off plus fascia carpentry can count as contracting under DBPR rules, get the company’s license or competency details and a current insurance certificate before anyone starts.
How the replacement visit runs
A full gutter replacement is quoted as one job with one warranty, not a stack of separate trades. The written scope names every run coming down and going up, the fascia boards we expect to replace, the new gutter size and color, and where each downspout will discharge. If an underground line exists, the quote says whether we are reconnecting and flushing it or replacing it. Anything we find after tear-off, such as extra rotten fascia, is shown to you with photos before the work changes.
- Tear-off, haul-away and disposal of the old system
- Fascia repair where the old hangers have rotted the board
- New seamless aluminum runs, resized where the old ones overflowed
- Downspouts reconnected, existing underground lines flushed
- Water test, cleanup and a follow-up call after the job
The replacement day, step by step
- Walk-through. The crew lead confirms colors and downspout spots against the written quote and moves or covers anything fragile near the walls.
- Tear-off. Old gutters, spikes and straps come down from ladders on standoffs and go straight into our truck.
- Fascia. Rotten boards exposed during tear-off are replaced before any hanger goes in; our fascia board repair page explains how.
- Form and hang. The roll former in the driveway makes each run to length, then it is pitched and fastened with hidden hangers and stainless screws.
- Reconnect. Downspouts are attached and existing underground lines flushed so the new system is not draining into a clogged pipe.
- Test and clean up. A hose test confirms every outlet drains, then we pick up screws and scraps and follow up after the job.

Gutter replacement cost: what moves the number
Your written quote breaks out each item so you can compare it with other bids. The biggest factors are:
- Linear feet and number of corners
- Removal and disposal of the old gutters
- How much fascia needs replacing once the old runs come off
- Upsizing to 6-inch gutters or 3x4 downspouts
- Number of downspouts and any underground reconnection
- One-story or two-story walls, and tile versus shingle roof edges
Two things make South Florida replacements vary more than people expect. One is what hides behind the old metal: a run that looks fine can come off to reveal soft fascia along its whole length. The other is drainage, because many older homes have buried downspout lines that need flushing or rerouting. Our repair versus replacement guide shows how those findings change the plan.
To keep the new system going, clean it before and during rainy season, rinse it if you live near the water, and fix a small drip before it rots the board behind it.

“Southern Gutters FL is an outstanding company, from start to finish. Contacted them on a Sunday thinking that I would not get a response till Monday, wrong received text from them shortly after leaving message. I explained my issue provided photos and architectural rendering received detailed response with what would be needed to correct a poor installation from another gutter company in this area and me playing Bob Villa which I don't recommend "I completely pulled the gutters out and off the house well mostly off some was still hanging" 😭🤪 and a quote for service and they installed two days later making my back yard perfect for the 4th of July weekend. First two photos was my Handy work 🤯 the next two are after Southern Gutter was finished with perfect installation and gutters that actually drain.”
“Showed up on time. Best quote that I received for seamless gutters - by far! Very professional crew and cleaned up after themselves. I’m very happy with the installation!”
Gutter Replacement questions, answered
How do I know my gutters need replacing instead of repair?
If the problems are isolated, such as one leaking miter or a few loose hangers, repair is usually right. Replacement makes sense when leaks show up at many joints, the metal is rusting or pinholed, whole runs sag, or the gutters overflow every storm because they are too small. We check all of this at a free estimate and tell you honestly which side of the line you are on.
Can new gutters be installed on rotted fascia?
They can be, but they should not be. Hangers screwed into soft wood pull loose under the weight of a full gutter, and the rot keeps spreading behind the new metal. When we find rotten fascia during tear-off, we replace those sections first, and the quote lists that work separately so there are no surprises.
Will you match my existing gutter color?
For a full replacement you can pick any color from our selection, including a change from what you have now. When we replace only one run, we match the closest stock color to your existing gutters. Older gutters fade in the Florida sun, so a brand-new run can look slightly brighter beside them for a while.
How long do aluminum gutters last near the coast?
Seamless aluminum with a baked enamel finish commonly lasts 20 years or more in South Florida when it is kept clean. Homes right on the ocean or Intracoastal see faster wear, and the fasteners and sealant usually give out before the aluminum itself. Rinsing salt off a few times a year and keeping cut edges painted makes a real difference.
Does homeowners insurance pay for gutter replacement?
Sometimes. Policies generally cover sudden wind or storm damage and exclude age, rust and wear, and many Florida policies apply a separate hurricane deductible. Your insurer decides. If a storm caused the damage, photograph it before cleanup; we document what we find and keep old wear separate in our notes. Our hurricane gutter insurance guide explains the process.
