A gutter that sags is a gutter that has stopped working the way it was designed. Water collects in the dip instead of running to the downspout, the extra weight pulls the next hanger loose, and the front lip tips out until rain sheets over it. Sagging gutter repair breaks that cycle by re-hanging the run on solid anchors and giving it a real slope again.

The good news is that most sagging runs can be saved. Southern Gutters FL re-hangs and re-pitches gutters as part of our broader gutter repair work, and we only suggest new metal when the old run is kinked, cracked or sitting on rotten wood.

Gutter pulling away from the house: what lets go first?

Gutters do not fall all at once. One fastener loosens, the load shifts to its neighbors, and the problem walks down the run. Here is what usually starts it on South Florida homes.

  • Spike-and-ferrule hangers. A long nail through a tube, driven into the fascia. Every gust and every expansion cycle works the hole a little larger until the spike backs out.
  • Wide hanger spacing. Builder-grade installs sometimes put hangers far apart. That might hold an empty gutter, but not one full of water and wet leaves.
  • Soft fascia. A hanger is only as good as the wood behind it. Years of water slipping behind the gutter rot the board, and screws strip out with almost no pull.
  • Weight. Wet black olive leaves, oak tassels and palm seed pods turn into a heavy sludge that loads every hanger during the rainy season.
  • Ladders and storms. A ladder leaned against the gutter lip bends it down, and storm wind or a falling frond can twist a run off its hangers.

When the wood behind a hanger softens, the gutter tips outward and the gap keeps widening.

How much fall does a gutter need? Re-pitch gutters without making them look crooked

A common working guideline is about a quarter inch of drop for every 10 feet of gutter, running toward the outlet. More slope drains faster, but on a long front elevation it starts to look visibly crooked against the fascia line, which matters on a house people see from the street.

On long runs we often split the difference: set a high point in the middle and pitch toward an outlet at each end. That keeps the visible drop small and gives the water two ways out, which helps when an afternoon cloudburst dumps a lot of rain in a short time.

Backward pitch is more common than you'd think

We regularly find runs that slope away from their downspout. It usually happens when a gutter was hung level and then settled, or when an outlet was moved without re-hanging the run.

Gutter hangers compared: what holds a run, and what lets it go

Three common hanger types side by side, from the loose-holding spike and ferrule to a screwed hidden hanger clip.

Hidden hangers are fastened with stainless-steel screws long enough to bite into solid wood. Where corners, outlets or heavy debris add load, we tighten the spacing rather than relying on the same interval everywhere.

Gutter standing water fix: why a puddle in the trough matters

A little water left in the bottom after rain is normal for an hour or two. Water that is still there days later means a low spot, and low spots get worse because the weight drags the hangers down further.

Water that stays put for days marks a low spot that will keep pulling the hangers down.

Standing water also keeps leaves soaking into sludge, holds moisture against the fascia, and gives mosquitoes a protected place to breed right outside your windows. Our guide on mosquitoes and clogged gutters covers that side of it. Clearing the debris helps for a week; resetting the pitch fixes the cause.

Can we realign gutters, or is the run too far gone?

Aluminum bends before it breaks, so most sagging runs straighten out once they are lifted back to the roofline and held by new hangers. We realign gutters in place whenever the metal will let us.

It is a different story when the sag has kinked the trough, cracked a corner, or pulled the run so far that the front lip is permanently bent. Then we quote a new section, fabricated on site to match. And when the fascia is soft along a long stretch, it has to be fixed first through fascia board repair, because no hanger holds in rotten wood.

Typical before

Before sagging gutter repair: a long gutter run dipping at mid-span on a one-story ranch home
Typical condition before a sag repair: a visible belly at mid-span, a gap at the fascia and a drip line in the bed below.

Typical after

After sagging gutter repair: a straight, re-pitched gutter run tight to the fascia on a ranch home
After sagging gutter repair: the run sits tight to the fascia in one straight line with a steady fall toward the downspout.

When fascia work brings in permits and licensing

Re-hanging a gutter on new hangers is repair work on an existing system. Replacing rotted fascia is different, because the board is part of the roof edge. In Broward and Miami-Dade, the Florida Building Code's High-Velocity Hurricane Zone provisions govern that edge, and your local building department decides whether a given repair needs a permit. The Florida DBPR licenses contractors for structural work, so for any job that includes fascia replacement, ask for the applicable license or county competency details and a certificate of insurance before work starts. HOAs may also want any new fascia or gutter section to match the approved color.

Gutter hangers, fascia checks and re-pitching: what a sag repair includes

Gutters usually sag for a while before they pull loose, and that is the cheapest moment to fix them. A sag repair is not just a few new screws at the low spot. We look at every hanger on the run, because the ones next to the dip are often carrying the load the failed ones dropped. Many installers space hangers roughly every two to three feet; builder-grade runs we see here are sometimes much wider, and we close those gaps instead of patching one spot.

  • Measuring the drop end to end and marking every low spot
  • Pulling loose spikes and failed clips, then probing the fascia behind each one
  • Screwed hidden hangers with stainless fasteners at tightened spacing
  • Resetting pitch toward the outlet, or splitting a long run to two outlets
  • A hose flush to show the trough drains with nothing left standing

Why Southern Gutters FL for a drooping run

Sag repairs are small jobs that some companies pass on, and they are exactly the jobs we like. Chance has run Southern Gutters FL as a family business since about 2020, and our insured crews bring the same string line and stainless screws to one section that they bring to a full install. Punctuality and Responsiveness are among the tags our reviewers choose most, and one review describes a two-day job finished in one. You get a written quote first and a follow-up call after the next heavy rain.

Re-hanging a sagging run, step by step

  1. We measure the drop end to end and photograph the problem areas so the written quote matches what you saw.
  2. The gutter is cleaned out first. Lifting a run full of wet sludge risks cracking a joint.
  3. We support the sagging section, pull failed spikes or hangers, and check the fascia behind each one.
  4. Any soft wood is replaced, then a string line is set from the high point to the outlet.
  5. New hidden hangers go in along that line, pulling the run up to the correct pitch.
  6. We flush the gutter with a hose to confirm it drains, then clean up and follow up after the next storm.

Each new hanger pulls the run up to the line, giving it a steady fall toward the outlet.

Your quote depends on how many feet need re-hanging, the hanger count, fascia condition, story height, roof type and whether any section must be replaced. Our sagging gutters guide is a useful read before the estimate. We work on these jobs throughout Plantation, Sunrise and the rest of Broward.

Sagging gutter repair cost: what we measure for the quote

  • Feet to re-hang. A six-foot dip near one corner is a different job from a full front elevation that has to come down to the string line.
  • Hanger count and spacing. Tightening wide spacing adds hangers along the whole run, not just at the low spot.
  • Fascia. Sound wood takes new screws today; soft wood has to be cut out and replaced first.
  • Damaged metal. A kinked trough or cracked corner means fabricating a new section on site.
  • Outlets. Splitting a long run to drain both ways can mean a second outlet and downspout.
  • Access. Second stories, barrel tile eaves and pool cages slow ladder setup.

“Had new seamless gutters installed due to previous installation being done improperly and causing water damage. Chance fixed the issues with new appropriately sized seamless gutters that look super clean and even added some underground drainage to get the water away from the house where it was pooling. Highly recommend. Pricing was competitive after several other quotes.”

Sagging Gutter Repair & Re-Pitching questions, answered

What makes gutters sag or pull away from the house?

Usually a combination of weak fasteners and weight. Spike-and-ferrule hangers loosen over time, hangers may be spaced too far apart, and screws strip out of fascia softened by water. Then the weight of wet leaves, seed pods and standing water pulls harder on the remaining hangers. Ladders leaned on the gutter and storm wind add to it.

How much slope should a gutter have?

A common guideline is roughly a quarter inch of fall per 10 feet, toward the downspout. Slightly more can help drainage, but too much looks crooked on the fascia. On long runs we often pitch from a high point in the middle down to an outlet at each end, which keeps the slope subtle while moving water quickly.

Can sagging gutters be fixed without replacement?

In most cases, yes. If the aluminum is not kinked or cracked and the fascia is sound, we lift the run, replace failed hangers with screwed hidden hangers and reset the pitch. Replacement only makes sense for sections that are permanently bent or split, or when the whole system has other problems like corrosion or undersizing.

Is standing water in my gutter a problem?

Water that is gone within a couple of hours after rain is fine. Water still sitting there days later means the gutter has a low spot or is pitched the wrong way. That standing water adds weight, speeds up debris rot, keeps the fascia damp and can breed mosquitoes, so it is worth correcting the pitch rather than just bailing it out.

How long does it take to re-hang a sagging gutter?

Usually a single visit. Once the quote is approved and the trough is cleaned out, most one-story re-hangs are finished the same day. Replacing soft fascia first, fabricating a new section on site or working two stories up adds time. In rainy season we start early in the day, because lifting and re-pitching a run goes better before the afternoon storms build over Broward.
