Not every roof leak starts on the roof. A large share of the water stains we are called about begin right at the eave, where the roof edge, the drip edge, the fascia and the gutter all meet. When those pieces do not overlap the way they should, rain runs behind the gutter instead of into it. Roof leak repair near gutters means closing that gap from the gutter side.

Southern Gutters FL is a gutter company, not a roofer, and that shapes how we handle these calls. We fix what sits at the gutter line, and if the evidence points higher up the roof, we say so before any work begins. This service sits under our broader gutter repair work.

Roof leak at the gutter line, or somewhere higher? How to tell

The location of the stain is the best first clue. Water that gets behind a gutter runs down the fascia and into the soffit, so it shows up at the very edge of the house. Water coming through the roof field usually appears farther in.

Where the stain shows up, and what it usually means
What you seeLikely source
Stained or sagging soffit right under the gutterGutter line or drip edge
Peeling fascia paint, soft wood behind hangersWater running behind the gutter
Ceiling stain within a foot or two of an outside wallOften the eave; needs a closer look
Stain in the middle of a room or near a skylight or chimneyRoof field or flashing; call a roofer
Leak only when gutters are cloggedOverflow over the back lip
Brown water stains on a vented soffit directly beneath a gutter at the roof eave
Soffit staining right under the gutter is a strong sign the water is getting in at the eave, not the roof field.

Timing is the second clue. A drip that only shows up during sideways squall-line rain, or only when the gutter is packed with leaves, points to the eave. A stain that grows during every shower, whatever the wind or gutter condition, is more likely coming through the roof itself.

Water behind gutters: the gap a short or missing drip edge leaves

A drip edge is the bent metal strip along the edge of the roof deck. Its job is to carry water off the roof and out past the fascia so it drops into the gutter. If it is missing, bent upward, or too narrow to reach past the gutter's back edge, water clings to the underside and follows the fascia down.

The gutter's position matters just as much. A gutter hung too low leaves a gap the water can fall straight through. One that has pulled away from the fascia opens a slot behind it. Our guide to water running behind your gutters shows how to spot this from the ground.

How a roof edge leak looks on shingle, barrel tile and flat roofs

Shingle roofs

The usual culprit is a drip edge that stops short or a gutter hung below it. These are often the easiest to correct from the gutter side.

Barrel and flat tile

Tile overhangs vary, and water can run off the bottom of a tile and land behind the gutter if the gutter sits too far back. We never walk on tile or lift it. Adjustments are made from a ladder, below the tile line.

Flat roofs with scuppers

Leaks around a scupper or a gravel stop are usually membrane or flashing issues. We can clear and reseal the leader head and gutter below, but the roof membrane is roofer territory.

Drip edge repair and fascia fixes we make from the gutter side

Everything on this list happens at or below the roof edge, which keeps it gutter work rather than roofing. Each item on your quote is tied to a stain or a water-test result, so you can see why it is there.

  • Gutter apron flashing. A strip of aluminum tucked behind the existing roof edge and lapped down into the gutter, so water has nowhere to go but in.
  • Re-hanging the gutter higher. Moving the run up so its back edge sits tight beneath the drip edge, then re-pitching it.
  • Re-fastening and sealing the gutter back. Closing the slot where a run has pulled off the fascia.
  • Fascia leak repair. Cutting out soft sections and installing new board before the gutter goes back up. Larger jobs go through our fascia board repair service.
  • Clearing overflow. A clogged gutter pushes water over its back lip; cleaning and outlet changes fix that path.

Apron flashing bridges the gap so water from the roof edge has only one place to go: into the gutter.

If the drip edge is missing entirely on a shingle roof, installing a new one means lifting the first course of shingles. That is roofing work, and we will tell you so rather than improvise around it.

When is the leak a roofer's job, not ours?

We would rather lose the job than fix the wrong thing. Call a licensed roofing contractor when you see cracked or slipped tiles, lifted or missing shingles, stains well away from exterior walls, leaks around chimneys, skylights, valleys or wall flashing, or a flat-roof membrane that is blistered or split. Roof-covering work in Florida typically needs a permit, and homeowners should ask any contractor for license and insurance details.

We work alongside your roofer

If the roof needs work at the eave, we can take the gutters down before the roofer starts and put them back afterward through our gutter removal and reinstall service.

What Florida's code and licensing rules say about the eave

The Florida Building Code, Residential calls for drip edge at the eaves and gables of shingle roofs, and in Broward and Miami-Dade the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone provisions add stricter roofing requirements. Installing or replacing drip edge, underlayment or roof covering is roofing work: it is generally permitted through your city or county building department and performed by a roofing contractor licensed through the Florida DBPR. Gutter apron flashing and re-hanging sit below that line. If a stain points to the roof, ask the roofer for their license number and proof of insurance before signing.

What to expect when we come out for a gutter-line leak

  1. We map the stains inside and out and match them to the eave above.
  2. The gutter is cleaned so a clog cannot hide the real cause.
  3. With a hose running along the roof edge, we watch where the water goes.
  4. Your written quote separates what we will fix from anything that belongs to a roofer.
  5. We make the repair, flush the system again to prove it, clean up, and check back after the next heavy rain.

Cost depends on how many feet need flashing or re-hanging, the extent of fascia and soffit damage, roof type, story height and whether the gutter has to come down. We see a lot of eave leaks on older homes in Lauderhill and Fort Lauderdale, where original fascia has had decades of exposure.

What sets the cost of a roof-edge leak repair

  • Length of the gap. Apron flashing or a re-hang along one corner is far less work than a full eave line.
  • Hidden damage. Soft fascia or stained, sagging soffit panels have to be opened up and replaced before the gutter returns.
  • Roof covering. Barrel tile and flat tile need slower ladder work below the tile line than shingle.
  • Height. Two-story eaves need taller ladders, standoffs and a spotter.
  • Gutter removal. If the run has to come down and go back up, that labor is listed on its own line.
  • Clogs. Packed leaves or seed pods causing back-lip overflow are cleared first.

Why call a gutter crew first, and how to keep the eave dry afterward

An eave leak sits between two trades, and a roofer is not always the first person who should look at it. We start at the gutter because most of the evidence lives there, and if the water test points higher, the written quote says so plainly. Southern Gutters FL has been family-owned since Chance took over around 2020; our insured crews work Monday through Friday, and reviewers single out our Professionalism and how we leave a property. When the roofer does need to come, we can pull the gutters first and rehang them on the new edge.

  • Keep gutters clear so a full trough never spills over its back lip.
  • Check the fascia paint each spring, before the rainy season starts.
  • Have the drip edge and gutter height checked whenever the roof is replaced.

Typical before

Before gutter-line roof leak repair: water-streaked fascia and stained soffit behind a low-hung gutter
Typical condition before a roof-edge leak repair: a gutter hung low, dark streaks down the fascia and brown rings on the soffit.

Typical after

After gutter-line roof leak repair: apron flashing, fresh fascia and a tight gutter at a shingle eave
After a roof-edge leak repair: apron flashing laps into the gutter, the run sits tight under the roof edge and the soffit is dry.

What customers say about our roof-edge leak repair work

4.9 average from 54 Google reviews · Read all reviews

“Had new seamless gutters installed due to previous installation being done improperly and causing water damage. Chance fixed the issues with new appropriately sized seamless gutters that look super clean and even added some underground drainage to get the water away from the house where it was pooling. Highly recommend. Pricing was competitive after several other quotes.”

Roof-Edge Leak Repair questions, answered

How do I know a leak is coming from the gutter line, not the roof?

Look at where the damage appears. Stains on the soffit, peeling fascia paint and water running down the wall behind the gutter point to the gutter line. Ceiling stains right next to an exterior wall can go either way. Stains in the middle of a room, or near chimneys, skylights and valleys, usually mean the roof itself is leaking.

What is a drip edge and why does it matter?

A drip edge is a bent metal strip along the roof's edge that directs water off the roof and out past the fascia into the gutter. Without it, or when it is too short, water wraps under the roof edge and runs down behind the gutter. Over time that rots fascia, stains soffits and can reach the wall and ceiling.

Can you repair the leak and the gutter in one visit?

Usually, yes, when the cause is at the gutter line. We can add flashing, re-hang the gutter tight under the roof edge, replace short fascia sections and reseal joints in the same visit. If extensive fascia replacement or roofer work is needed first, we schedule the gutter repair to follow that work.

When should I call a roofer instead?

Call a roofer for cracked or slipped tiles, lifted or missing shingles, leaks around chimneys, skylights, valleys or wall flashing, a damaged flat-roof membrane, or stains far from exterior walls. Replacing a missing drip edge on a shingle roof is also roofing work. We will tell you if we see any of these and can coordinate gutter removal for the roofer.

Should a gutter sit under the drip edge?

Yes. The back of the gutter should tuck up close beneath the drip edge so roof water falls into the trough, with the edge hanging just over the gutter rather than buried deep inside it. If the gutter hangs inches low, water drops behind it. On many South Florida re-roofs, we raise the run or add apron flashing to close that gap.
