Gutter removal and reinstall is a job many gutter companies turn down, because there is often no new system to sell. We take it. If your roofer needs the gutters off before a reroof, we remove them, store or haul them, and come back to reset them or install new seamless gutters when the roof edge is done.

We also accept removal-only jobs. No new-gutter purchase is required: if you are painting, redoing stucco, or simply don’t want the gutters anymore, we take them down and haul everything away. Homeowners have called it out in our Google reviews, because it is surprisingly hard to find someone who will do it.

A gutter removal service with no new purchase attached

Removal-only calls come from all kinds of situations, and we treat each one as a real job rather than a favor:

  • A painter or stucco crew needs clear walls and fascia
  • A home sale where the buyer asked for damaged gutters to come off
  • Old steel gutters rusting through on a house that drains well without them
  • A storm-bent run hanging by two hangers; see fallen and detached gutter repair if you want it fixed instead
  • A landlord clearing a rental before renovations

Removal-only jobs end with the old system bundled and loaded, and nothing left in the yard.

Small jobs are welcome. A single back-wall run or one dangling downspout gets the same care as a whole house. Once the gutters are off, you will see the bare fascia and the old screw holes; if the wood is soft or the paint line shows, we point it out so your painter or carpenter can plan for it. If you later decide you want gutters after all, the free estimate is the same as for anyone else.

Should you remove gutters for a new roof?

In almost every case, yes. A reroof replaces the drip edge, and the drip edge sits right where the gutter’s back flange meets the fascia. Tear-off also rains broken tile, old shingles and nails straight into whatever is hanging below the roof edge.

Some roofers pull gutters themselves, but they are prying them off to get to the roof, not saving them. Long seamless runs kink easily if they aren’t supported along their whole length, and a bent run can’t be straightened back to a clean line. Our guide to gutters before or after a new roof walks through the order of work.

With the gutters already down, tear-off debris and new drip edge work can’t damage them.

The permit belongs to the roofer. In Broward and Miami-Dade, reroofs are filed on the uniform High-Velocity Hurricane Zone roofing application, which records the drip edge type, size and fastener spacing, and Broward’s hurricane-mitigation policy adds roof-deck re-nailing and a secondary water barrier when a site-built home is reroofed. That edge detail is permitted work, so gutters go back only after the roofer is finished with it. Ask both contractors for county competency or license details and a certificate of insurance.

What does each gutter removal option include?

Every job starts with a look at the gutters while they are still up, because that inspection decides which option makes sense. The written quote names the option, the run lengths and who handles underground lines, so you and your roofer work from the same page.

  • Removal only: gutters, downspouts, hangers and straps taken down, old screw holes pointed out, and everything hauled away
  • Detach, store and reset: runs labeled by wall, stored flat on site, then rehung on new stainless screws and resealed at end caps and outlets
  • Remove and replace: the old system hauled off and new seamless gutters roll-formed on site once the roof edge is finished
  • Underground lines: inlets capped before tear-off and flushed when the downspouts go back
  • Cleanup: tarps under the work area, buckets for screws and hangers, and gates closed behind us

Reinstall gutters after roof replacement, or start fresh?

Putting the old gutters back can be the right call. It can also mean hanging a tired system on a brand-new roof. We look at the gutters before they come down and tell you which applies.

When to reset and when to replace
ConditionReset the old guttersInstall new
Seamless aluminum in good shape, no kinksYes, with new screws and fresh sealantOptional
Sectional gutters with tired jointsPossible but short-livedRecommended
Changing shingle to tileOften undersized for the new roofUsually 6-inch
Rust, pinholes or faded finishNoYes
Runs too long to remove without bendingRiskyOften simpler

A switch from shingle to concrete tile deserves special attention. Tile sheds water faster and overhangs farther, so a 5-inch gutter that worked under shingle may overflow under tile. Our oversized gutters and gutter replacement pages cover the upgrade options, all part of our wider seamless gutter installation service.

Gutter detach and reset, step by step with your roofer

  1. Agree on dates. We confirm the tear-off day with your roofer and plan to remove the gutters the day before or that morning.
  2. Disconnect. Downspouts come off first, and any underground drain inlets get capped so roof debris can’t fall into them.
  3. Take down. Working from ladders with standoffs, we bring long runs down with a person every 10 to 15 feet so the gutter never bends under its own length.
  4. Store or haul. Gutters we will reset are labeled by wall and laid flat in a side yard or garage; everything else leaves on our truck.
  5. Return. Once the roofer has finished the edge metal, we come back, check the fascia, and either reset the old runs or form new ones on site with the roll former.
  6. Test. A hose runs water through every outlet, underground lines are uncapped and flushed, and the yard is cleaned.

Gutters that will be reset are labeled by wall and stored flat so they go back exactly where they came from.

With the gutters off, the fascia is exposed, so it is the right time to fix soft wood. Our fascia board repair crew can handle it between tear-off and reinstall.

Old gutter haul away and what your quote covers

Removal quotes reflect linear feet, one or two stories, the number of downspouts, any underground lines to disconnect and reconnect, whether the gutters are stored or hauled away, and whether they go back up or new ones are installed. Fascia repair found after removal is quoted separately before we do it.

Removal-only is the simplest ticket: footage, height and haul-away. A reset adds a second trip, rehanging labor, new screws and sealant, and the care of storing long runs without bending them. Each underground inlet adds a cap-and-flush step. Switching from shingle to tile can change the plan, because a gutter that kept up under shingle may need upsizing and new edge metal may sit at a different height.

Haul-away is part of the job, so the old metal leaves the property the same day.

When we install new gutters after a reroof, they carry our 3-year workmanship and 20-year materials warranty. Resetting an existing system is different, since we didn’t supply that metal, and we spell out what is covered in writing before the job. We work with roofers and homeowners across Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach and Lauderhill.

Why homeowners and roofers call us: one reviewer kept hearing that companies don’t remove gutters unless you buy new ones, until Chance said yes, skipped the sales pitch and took the old metal away. Another had us replace gutters after a new roof install. Chance has run Southern Gutters FL as a family company since about 2020, from West Palm Beach to Oakland Park to North Lauderdale. Estimates are free and written, and the office is open Monday to Friday, 9 to 5.

Gutter Removal & Reinstall questions, answered

Will you remove gutters even if I'm not buying new ones?

Yes. We take removal-only jobs with no new-gutter purchase required. We take down the gutters, downspouts and hangers, haul everything away, and leave the walls and yard clean. Many companies decline these jobs because there is no sale attached, which is exactly why homeowners and painters call us for them.

Should gutters come off before a roof replacement?

Almost always. The roofer needs to replace the drip edge where the gutter mounts, and tear-off debris will dent or bend anything left hanging. Removing the gutters properly first protects them if you plan to reuse them, and it gives the roofer clear access to the edge.

Can old gutters be reused after a reroof?

Sometimes. Seamless aluminum gutters in good condition, removed carefully without kinks, can be reset with new screws and fresh sealant. Sectional gutters with worn joints, rusted or faded systems, and gutters too small for a new tile roof are usually better replaced. We assess them before removal so you can decide ahead of time.

Do you coordinate with my roofer's schedule?

Yes. We confirm the tear-off date with your roofer, remove the gutters the day before or that morning, and come back once the roof edge is finished. If the roofing schedule slips because of weather, as it often does in rainy season, we adjust our dates to match.

How long does gutter removal take?

Usually a few hours for a single-story house and up to a day for a larger or two-story home, depending on footage, downspout count and how many underground inlets need capping. Reinstall is a second visit after the roofer’s edge metal is done. If we are installing new seamless gutters instead, most homes are finished in one day.
