Gutter guards cut down on cleaning; they do not end it. Leaves, fronds and oak pollen collect on the surface, fine grit washes underneath, and one day the rain starts pouring over the front instead of soaking through. Gutter guard cleaning gets that system back to shedding water, and Southern Gutters FL does it on guards we installed and on guards from any other company.

We are a family-owned crew working out of North Lauderdale, and this service sits alongside the installations described on our main gutter guards page. No sales pitch for a new system comes with the visit; if a guard is failing, we tell you why and what your options are.

Clogged gutter guards: how to tell from the ground

The easiest test is to step outside during a steady rain. A working guard soaks water through and the downspouts run hard. A clogged one lets water slide across the top and pour off the front edge, often at corners and below roof valleys first.

Water pouring over the front of a guarded gutter means the surface is no longer letting rain through.
  • Small plants or moss sprouting on the guard surface
  • Dark film or streaks on mesh, common under black olive trees
  • Downspouts trickling during storms that should have them gushing
  • Leaf piles or frond pieces sitting in the same spot for weeks
  • Panels that look lifted, shifted or gapped at the seams

Behind those signs are a few local causes. Sooty mold from black olives coats mesh in a dark film, our humidity lets moss and algae root on shaded runs, and shingle granules wash under panels with every storm. Loose screws let panels shift, opening seams for seeds.

How we clean gutter guards on each visit

Every visit covers both layers: the guard surface and the gutter beneath it. Cleaning only the top looks good from the street but leaves grit in the trough, slowly raising the water line.

  1. Clear fronds, seed pods and leaf piles off the guard by hand.
  2. Brush the surface with soft bristles and rinse with low-pressure water so mesh is not stretched or torn.
  3. Lift a sampling of panels to check the trough, and more if we find sludge or shingle granules building up.
  4. Scoop and flush the gutter, then run water through every downspout until it flows clear.
  5. Reseat and refasten panels, swapping stripped screws for new stainless fasteners.
  6. Photograph anything that needs attention and haul away all the debris.

Large debris comes off by hand before the mesh is brushed, so nothing gets ground into the weave.

We skip pressure washers on mesh. A high-pressure tip can stretch the weave or punch through it, and once the mesh is torn, debris drops straight into the trough. On tile roofs the whole job is done from ladders standing off the gutter, so no tile is stepped on or leaned against. Before we leave, you get a short rundown of what we found, with photos of anything worth watching before the next visit.

When do we remove and reinstall gutter guards to clean underneath?

Not every visit needs panels off. Fine mesh guards often stay mostly clean below, and a few test lifts tell us whether the trough needs attention. Perforated screens and older snap-in covers are different: seeds and grit fall through them, so pulling panels is usually the only way to clean what sits underneath.

Lifting a test panel shows what has washed underneath, which often decides whether more panels come off.

Panels come off in order and go back in the same place, and we handle mesh carefully so it is not creased. If a panel is bent beyond use, we point it out and quote a replacement where parts are available. Sagging runs or leaking corners found with the panels off are noted for a gutter repair quote rather than fixed without your approval.

Leaf filter cleaning and guards installed by other companies

Many of the systems we service were put on by national guard companies or by installers who have since moved on. We are not affiliated with or a dealer for any guard brand, but we work on mesh, screen and cover systems of all kinds, including the well-known micro-mesh products people often call leaf filters.

Check your guard warranty first

Some guard manufacturers include cleaning or service terms in their warranty. Before any outside company lifts panels, read your paperwork so you know how third-party service is treated.

If you are weighing whether to keep an older system, our page on micro-mesh gutter guards explains what a modern fine-mesh install looks like, so you can compare it with what is on your roof now.

Gutter guard maintenance: how often does your canopy call for service?

Typical guard service schedules by tree cover
What is over your roofSuggested scheduleWhy
Little or no tree coverOnce a year, before rainy seasonGrit and roof granules still collect
Palms near the houseOnce or twice a yearFronds and flower stalks pile on top
Black olive or live oak overheadTwice a year: late spring and fallPollen film, tassels and small leaves mat the surface
Heavy mixed canopy with pinesTwo to three times a yearConstant small debris and needles

If you want those visits on the calendar without having to remember, our gutter maintenance plans can include guarded systems. The guide on whether gutter guards need cleaning explains the reasoning behind each interval.

What guard service prevents, and what it does not cover

Regular service keeps water going into the gutter rather than over it, which protects fascia, soffits, landscaping and the ground along your foundation. It also stops standing water from collecting under panels, where mosquitoes can breed out of sight.

Typical before

Mesh gutter guard coated in sooty film, matted leaves and a seedling before gutter guard cleaning
Typical condition before guard cleaning: sooty film and matted leaves sealing the mesh so rain runs over instead of through.

Typical after

Clean stainless mesh gutter guard with open weave and rinse water soaking through after gutter guard cleaning
After cleaning: open mesh from end to end, with rinse water soaking straight through into the gutter.

A cleaning visit does not include gutter repairs, replacement guard panels, roof cleaning or exterior washing; anything beyond the clean is quoted separately in writing. Black streaks on the gutter face are handled through our pressure cleaning and gutter whitening service. We clean guarded gutters throughout Sunrise, Lauderhill and neighboring cities.

What changes the price of a guard cleaning

Your quote follows the work, not a flat rate. The main variables are the length of guarded gutter, how the guards are fastened, and whether panels can stay on or must come off for a full trough clean. Story height and tile roofs add ladder time. A thick pollen mat or sludge under screens takes longer than a light brush, more downspouts mean more flushing, and any replacement panels or screws are listed separately.

Who should clean your guards, and what rules apply?

Warranties, HOA access and ladder safety

Read the guard maker's warranty before anyone lifts panels, since some terms address outside service. Condo boards and HOAs often require vendors to show a certificate of insurance before working on buildings, so ask your management office early. Crews working at height are covered by OSHA's ladder standard, 29 CFR 1926.1053, which calls for stable footing and secured ladders. Cleaning is maintenance, but if the visit turns up gutters that must be replaced, permit questions go to your city or county building department, and Florida's DBPR licensing rules can apply to installation work.

Gutter Guard Cleaning & Service questions, answered

Why do gutter guards still need cleaning?

Guards keep most debris out of the trough, but they cannot stop it from landing on top. Leaves, frond pieces, seed pods and oak pollen build a layer that slows water, and fine grit and roof granules still wash underneath. Once that layer forms, rain slides across the guard and over the edge instead of soaking through.

Can you service guards installed by another company?

Yes. We clean and refasten mesh, screen and cover systems no matter who installed them, including national-brand micro-mesh products. We are not affiliated with any guard brand. If your guard came with a warranty that mentions cleaning or service, check its terms before any outside company lifts the panels.

How often should gutter guards be cleaned?

It depends on the trees. Homes with little cover may need one visit a year before rainy season. Palms usually mean once or twice a year. Black olive, live oak or heavy mixed canopy often calls for two or three visits, timed after oak pollen season and again in the fall.

Do you remove guards to clean the gutter underneath?

When it is needed, yes. We lift test panels on every visit to check the trough. Fine mesh often stays fairly clean below, while screens and older covers usually need panels removed. Panels go back in their original positions and are refastened, and any damaged ones are pointed out before replacement is quoted.
